  • A psycholgist said that Heard has a personality disorder.

  • The label can perpetuate sexist stereotypes because the condition is more diagnosed in women.

  • The outdated term will likely be phased out of future DSMs according to a psychologist.

According to a forensic psychologist hired by Johnny Depp's legal team, his ex-fiancée has histrionic and borderline personality disorders.

The only condition Heard suffers from is post-traumatic stress disorder, according to her psychologist.

The former couple is in the midst of a weeks-long defamation trial that has exposed their toxic relationship and landed them in the public consciousness.

Some mental-health professionals say histrionic personality disorder is outdated and sexist.

Histrionic personality disorder

Histrionic personality is a cousin of histrionic personality disorders, which are often characterized by dramatic, erratic, or volatile behaviors.

Recently updated continuing education materials for psychiatrists and psychologists describe histrionic personality disorder as exaggerated emotions and attention-seeking behaviors. Patients need to meet at least five criteria to be diagnosed with the condition.

  • It's uncomfortable when not the center of attention.

  • Seductive or provocative behavior.

  • Emotions are shifting and shallow.

  • Uses appearance to draw attention.

  • The speech was impressionist and vague.

  • Emotions can be dramatic or exaggerated.

  • It is suggested.

  • Considers relationships more intimate than they are.

The person&s everyday functioning needs to be affected by these characteristics.

The typical patient dresses flamboyantly, is very engaging and at times entertaining. Their stories are usually very interesting and told in very emotional tones, according to Dr. Erick Messias, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Messias said they find jobs that allow them to be the center of attention, like acting and teaching. They are prone to manipulation by cult leaders. They have the same level of compassion for others as people with a personality disorder.

Messias said that many people with HPD find a way to live with their condition, and don't see their quirks as problematic.

The diagnosis is rooted in sexism and can perpetuate stereotypes

It is thought that about 2% to 3% of the population has histrionic personality disorder, which is more likely to be found in women. Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse increases the risk, but it is unclear what causes it.

Roxanne Khan, a senior lecturer in forensic psychology at the University of Central Lancashire, told Insider that these are common in survivors of childhood. On the flip side of the coin, these traits are used to label these women as not normal.

The term hysteria was used to blame women's emotions, symptoms, and behaviors on the uterus, which is why the diagnosis is criticized. She thinks the DSM will be phased out soon.

I think histrionic personality is more of a light version of narcissism, with more of the seductive attention-seeking and shallow dramatic emotion.

The sexist notions that females are mad and men are bad can be perpetuated by labeling women with HPD and men with psychopathy.
