In the 1999 cult classic Any Given Sunday, Rooney plays a beloved, yet old-and-injured, man.
It's possible that Ryan Tannehill feels the same way about the quarterback that the TennesseeTitans took in the third round of the draft.
Tannehill made a comment.
Tannehill doesn't think it's his job to mentor Willis.
Tannehill explained during the press conference that he was unaware that the team was selecting a player who might be taking his job sooner than later, but that he sent a text to Willis after he was drafted. In the playoffs, theTitans had home-field advantage, but they lost to theBengals 19-16 in the Divisional Round, with Tannehill throwing 3 picks.
Tannehill said that he needed therapy after the season. I didn't get a lot of sleep for a while. It took me a long time to get out of the dark place.
I've worked through it, but therapy and time helped. It took a lot of work to get through it.
Since Tannehill arrived in Nashville, the team has made the playoffs. If you check the box scores from the games that ended each of Tennessee's seasons, you'll see that Tannehill's four touchdown's match his four interception's. The team drafted a quarterback in the third round who many thought would go off the board in the first.
You would think that teams would have figured out how to draft quarterbacks by now, since quarterback is the most important position in the NFL and sports. They haven't. Most of the time, it's a total waste of time. Tannehill will be looking over his shoulder until he knows that he isn't the next face of the franchise.
In sports, veterans are supposed to mentor the young guys. Playing quarterback is different. Helping the person who is trying to take your job can be a slippery slope because there can only be one. Tannehill kept it real instead of giving us a cookie-cutter answer. If you don't want to help someone who could be your eventual replacement in a highly competitive workplace, there's nothing wrong with that. This is why the humor in this situation is so ironic, given that it is playing out just like in the movies.
Cap Rooney told his coach Tony D Amato that he should take it easy during practice. Rest up, let the kid play a few games. You know you were great, but time marches on.
By the end of the film, Cap Rooney and Willie Beamen have become good friends and start working together. Rooney gives his job to Beamen because he knows it is the best decision for the team. It leads to a big win. Let's see if the same script is followed by the TITANS.
