Jesse Lingard has started four games for Manchester United this season

Jesse Lingard was denied a farewell at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old, who joined United when he was seven years old, is set to leave the club this summer.

In the last couple of weeks, he has played far more games than he used to.

He asked me to release him from the game and training the next day for personal family reasons.

This was the reason. I had to make a decision between Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard, or the young Alejandro Garnacho, who I would have loved to have brought on and given a chance to play.

Lingard has made 22 appearances for United this season, but only four of them have started.

Fred, Phil Jones, and Cavani were brought on to replace him during the win over Brentford.

Lingard's brother posted a furious message on social media complaining that after 20 years of blood, sweat and tears, four domestic trophies and three cup final goals, there was not even a farewell for the England player.

Lingard was sad about the situation.

I decided to bring on Edinson. Someone else might have asked if it was classless not to bring on Garnacho if I had not brought on Edinson.

This is part of the game and you have to make a decision and this will not be popular with everyone.

The last two games for United are away to Crystal Palace andBrighton.
