A new Apple patent suggests that a future iPad or version of iPadOS could include the ability to transform the device into a macOS-like user experience when attached to an external keyboard.
Patently Apple reported on the patent, which is wide-ranging in its potential implementation. Only a few of Apple's ideas see the light of day. The patent describes a base device, such as a keyboard that includes keys and a trackpad, that could be coupled with a computing device, such as an iPad, to deliver what seems like a macOS similar experience with an Apple Pencil.

Other images in the filing show how the computing device can be detected from the keyboard and used as a stand-alone device, similar to how users can currently detach the iPad.

A future MacBook and iPad combo could be imagined by the patent. When attached to a keyboard, the combo becomes an iPad and an Apple Pencil, which can be used with a Mac. The future of Apple's computer line may be a combo of the iPad and MacBook, as Apple has long said that a touch screen Mac is not something it wants to make.
In his April 17 edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman floated a seemingly identical idea to the one presented in Apple's patent. Gurman speculated in the newsletter that the future of the iPad should include three modes: a touch-screen mode, an Apple Pencil, and a Pro. Gurman has reported that Apple is planning a new multitasking experience for iPadOS 16.
