Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract with the club and will stay until the end of the season.

With four games remaining, Arteta has led the team into fourth place, and they are trying to get into the playoffs for the first time in three years.

He said that he wanted to take the club to the next level and compete with the top teams.

In order to do that, we have to be playing in the league. We have to be able to evolve the team, improve our players, improve all departments, generate even more connection with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the club, and recruit top talent and the best people for this club to drive this project to that level.

In 2020 Arteta won his first piece of silverware when he was part of the team that won the FA Community Shield.

The 40-year-old confirmed his vision still aligned with the club's owners.

When I spoke to Josh, he wanted to take the club the way I wanted it to go. Stan has said that when I have been with both of them, they have always delivered.

It allows me to continue to work for a club that I love so much and be around people that I really, really like, and to be able to achieve things together, so I'm really looking forward to that

Analysis: Arteta rewarded for Arsenal progress

Sky Sports' Nick Wright.

Regardless of what happens over the next fortnight, Mikel Arteta is the man who will determine the long-term future of the club.

The timing of the announcement is a huge show of faith from the club's hierarchy which shows their confidence in the Spaniard's leadership and rewards two and a half years of steady progress.

The circumstances have been difficult. Arteta's side is 11th in the league. He has had to make unpopular decisions along the way, most recently when he allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave.

On and off the pitch, the fruits of his work can be seen. He has made a young, hungry and dynamic side with enormous potential for further improvement, all while transforming the culture within the club and fostering a spirit of togetherness.

The sense of drift that had set in across the previous decade has been replaced by renewed optimism, because fans and players have formed a special connection at the Emirates Stadium.

There have been challenging periods on the pitch but the underlying numbers are moving in the right direction and the points totals have improved year on year under his watch.

Even if they don't make the playoffs this season, it is clear that they are back on track and that they are in the top flight.
