The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on a gymnast who is rumored to have once been engaged to Putin.

The chair of Russia's National Media Group is on a preliminary sanctions list that must be approved by the European governing bodies, according to a report.

On Friday morning, ambassadors from each of the 27 member states are expected to discuss the sanctions list, as well as the gradual halt of Russian oil imports by the end of 2022, according to the report.

According to the document detailing the potential sanctions, the National Media Group uses its position as a media outlet to share propaganda.

The US has considered sanctions against Kabaeva but has not yet done so out of concern that it may escalate the conflict.

The New York Times reported that a Russian newspaper wrote in 2008 that Putin and Kabaeva were secretly betrothed.

The Kremlin and the pair have denied any allegations of a relationship.

She had earned two Olympic medals, 14 World Championship medals, and 21 European Championship medals.

She joined Russia's parliament after ending her athletic career and became the head of the media outlet. She is rumored to live in Switzerland.

The EU, the US, and the UK have continued to impose sanctions on Russia since the beginning of February.
