It can be difficult to sort the action games in the Play Store from the rest. After hundreds of hours of playing, we have rounded up the best action-packed games that are worth checking out.

Many of the games on this list are paid apps, which might give you pause, so you need to trust us when we say these games are well worth the investment. It is always good to support those teams that are making great games.

When you are done here, be sure to check out our best games for other genres.

Ailment

Ailment is a top-down sci-fi shooter with tons of movie references and horror elements. There are a lot of guns and enemies to kill in the game. It is not the most family-friendly game because it is brutal and graphic. It is a great time.

RECOMMENDED VIDEOS FOR YOU...

The campaign has you wake up on a strange ship. You have to kill the crew to get out. There is plenty of humor and references to pop culture and media that will make you laugh. The retro art is great.

In a fight to the death, you can battle friends or strangers. You can earn guns and skins to modify your game.

AnimA

This is another ARPG for loot lovers. AnimA pays homage to the franchise of the same name and sets itself apart from the others. And you know what? The game is awesome on its own merits.

The fonts may look familiar, but any fan of the game will appreciate the loop, the dark atmosphere, and all of the enemies to kill. I lost a lot of time in AnimA just to get more loot. It is free to play and comes with microtransactions, but they are not bad.

Candies 'n Curses

If you are looking for non-stop action, look no further than Candies. It is a rock solid arcade rogue-lite that is light on story, heavy on the action, and sometimes brutal with its punishment. Molly is a young girl who dares to enter the haunted mansion in the town. She becomes trapped by the mansion's hordes of zombies.

Molly must use her flashlight to get through the mansion and take out any ghosts that stand in her way if she wants to escape. The fun comes not only from the action itself, but also from the rogue-lite aspects. You are expected to fail a lot and come back with new equipment and charms to improve your abilities. The candies and curses can either help or hurt you and they can be expensive.

A new DLC was launched a little while back, and the developer, Takoboy Studios, continues to support the game. The free version is good. The ads are not horrible at times. You can pay to get the ad-free version, as well as other in-app purchases for cosmetics or in-game currency.

Dandara

Dandara was well-received for its PC and console releases.

Dandara plays at a much faster pace than other modern Metroidvanias like Dead Cells and Hollow Knight. I found the overall speed of the game to be closer to other platformers like Celeste, even though it lacks the perma-death of Dead Cells. It is unique in that you can manipulate gravity to jump off walls and ceilings.

There are three new areas in this version of the game, as well as another boss, power-ups, and more. I think you will like it. It also has controller support.

Dead Cells

Dead Cells was available on other platforms, but it was worth the wait. The game is one of the best of its kind. It mixes tough, brutal combat with a roguelike to make sure every death hurts. When you fail, you get back up and try to do better the next time.

If you prefer that route, the port supports controllers. The controls are top-notch, but it is hard to beat an external controller.

Dead Cells is a steep challenge filled with dangerous enemies, loot, and build diversity. It is one of the best games on the Play Store.

Deemo II

Rhythm games require super-human reflexes to truly master, and they have some of the most furious action you can find on mobile. Deemo II is a rhythm game from Rayark, the team behind Cytus II.

Deemo II takes you to another world where music has the potential to save the world, just like Cytus II does.

Play as a young girl on a quest to save herself and her friends from extinction. Two-touch piano controls are easy to pick up, but hard to master, so play a huge roster of music charts. It is completely free without ads and includes in-app purchases for additional music packs and optional in-game currency.

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is an open-world action-adventure title that has become a surprise hit. The game is gorgeous, the story is engaging, and it takes a lot of inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You will see why it is easy to lose hours in Genshin Impact if you try it out.

The biggest weakness of the game is the monetization. It is free to play on mobile, PC, and PS4 (with cross-save between PC and mobile), but with that comes hefty in-app purchases and an abrupt stop when it comes to the endgame grind. It can be very frustrating.

I love Genshin Impact a lot. The gacha mechanics for new characters and weapons are not bad, and the game itself is good enough that you might feel good will toward the developer. If you don't pay anything, get ready for a long grind.

Grimvalor

Grimvalor is a side-scroller that features tight controls, excellent movement abilities, and pretty graphics. This was my go-to whenever I had time to myself.

You need to level your character by being tactical about how you approach enemies. There are lots to explore, with secrets hidden throughout the map. The world wants to see you fail, but it also wants you to fight on. It is up to your skill to see yourself through when the odds are against you.

After you get the first act for free, you have to pay $7 for the full game. This tactic allows you to experience the game as it is, and you have the choice to pay to continue. If you like it, give it a try.

Huntdown

The cities of Huntdown have a bleak future. Gang leaders rule the streets and their lackeys wreak havoc. As a bounty hunter, your job is to take them all down one by one and restore order to this warped world. You will need to platform your way to each level to take them out, and you will have to use every weapon in your possession.

One of Huntdown's biggest draws is the fact that levels are short but challenging. This is an action-platforming with a shiny 80s veneer.

The 16-bit graphics are retro fun, the soundtrack is awesome, and the game has attitude and style coming out the wazoo. Huntdown is ad-free and only an in-app purchase of $8.49 comes after you have completed the first two demo stages.

ICEY

ICEY is an action game where you play as a mysterious warrior that kicks serious ass. The game plays perfectly, with tight controls and new skills to be unlocked as you progress through the game.

If that was all ICEY was, it would still be on this list. The meta-narrative at play here explores the relationship between the player and the narrator. It is unique among games as a whole, but especially mobile games.

Injustice 2

The sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us is one of the best fighting games on the market. The sequel to the first game features more fantasy fight match-ups between your favorite heroes and villains from the DC Universe.

As you battle in 3 vs 3 fights with the ability to swap out fighters as needed, you will be able to build your ultimate team. The usual suspects are here, as well as a whole slew of new heroes and villains, which you can discover as you play.

Ninja Chowdown

I think the best action games tend to be ones that get you in the middle of the action with little to no story. Your Doughjo's fanciest donut has been stolen by rival restaurants to support a very fun game, and Ninja Chowdown did an incredible job of setting up a truly absurd premise.

Ninja Chowdown is an endless runner with simple, responsive touch controls and challenging levels to test your reaction times. The endless mode will cycle you through the various stages in seamless transitions, while the story mode has different themed levels and bosses.

It is free to play, but I would recommend paying the IAP to get the ad-free version.

Pascal's Wager

It is an interesting game. It is an actionRPG with several Souls-like hallmarks. Combat is difficult and enemies can be killed when you stop at a checkpoint.

The characters are what sets it apart. You don't create a character and then build it. You can choose a character and change it between the ones you have unlocked. You don't spec points into your build because you get to try different play styles on the fly.

So yes, it is fine that Pascal's Wager tries to be Dark Souls. I recommend that you use a controller, because you will die more than you need to with the touchscreen controls. It is also a premium purchase with no nonsense.

Penarium

Team17 is best known for their work from the Worms franchise. Penarium is a fast-paced strategy game that requires quick reflexes to survive.

The story tells the tale of a portly farm boy who always wants to go somewhere. One day, a circus show rolls into town and Willy decides to run away for a bit of fun and excitement. This is not an ordinary circus, it is the Penarium, a cruel circus. It is both dark and light-hearted.

Redungeon

It is not a stretch to say that roguelikes have been having a resurgence in popularity over the past few years. All that action is not only for consoles, but also for phones and tablets. Redungeon is an endless dungeon-crawler featuring randomized dungeons, increasing levels of difficulty, and some adorable pixel art.

Staying alive through the gauntlet of traps is no easy task. Playing like a brutal obstacle course, your goal is to collect treasures and make it as far as you can in one piece.

I have found the on-screen button controls to be easy to use and responsive. Each character has their own abilities and can be unlocked.

Redungeon is free to play with. There is an optional one-time in-app purchase to remove ads and additional in-app purchases to buy more coins, but coins can also be acquired by just playing the game, so the monetization is refreshingly fair. There is no time like the present to try Redungeon if you missed it.

Witcheye

Witcheye is a wonderful retro-styled game that looks and sounds like it was created in the 90s, but also makes excellent use of touch controls, and is a near- perfect mobile platforming game. You play as a witch who transforms into a bouncing eyeball as she heads off on a quest to retrieve her stolen magical ingredients.

There are over 50 levels to enjoy and each has a very memorable soundtrack. There is a hard mode that completely changes the game to up the challenge. If you like speed running, there are even speed running tools.

These are the best action-packed games for Android

If you're willing to spend a couple of dollars upfront, there's no shortage of great games on the Play Store. There are many free-to-play and paid games here, but a few stand out.

Deemo II is a rhythm game that I have to give up. The music, graphics, and game are all on point. Considering that this game is free without ads, it is incredible how well executed the total package is.

Penarium is a tough-as-nails game where you play as a hapless boy who is tricked into fighting for his life in an evil circus. There are a lot of challenging levels to play through and it plays surprisingly well with the simple touchscreen controls.

I have to recommend Ninja Chowdown. It is a wonderfully challenging runner that makes the genre fun again.

Added Deemo II and Ninja Chowdown to our list.
