When King Viserys I Targaryen names his first-born daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, as his successor to the Iron Throne, not all of the king's subjects are down with him. Queen Alicent, who was born of House Hightower and bore Viserys a male heir who would have gotten the throne through traditional patriarchy, is included. Viserys Targaryen, brother of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, was supposed to rule before the crown was given to her brother.
When Viserys dies, there is a war that splits the country in two, with some houses supporting Rhaenyra, and others fighting for Alicent and her son Aegon, with all the political maneuvering, scheming, and violence that Game of Throne does so well. Check it out.
