The debate among Georgia Republican Senate candidates was defined by the man who wasn't there, Herschel Walker.

Gary Black, Latham Saddler, Josh Clark, and Jon McColumn are all viable candidates for the Republican nomination if the race was not dominated by Walker. Each tried to make a case for GOP voters to turn away from Walker and consider them in the May 24 primary as an alternative to take on the Democratic incumbent.

The Navy veteran and former bank executive said that he hasn't showed up for the fifth debate or forum. This last election cycle, we got to see Raphael Warnock in action.

The Atlanta Press Club, which sponsored the debate on Georgia Public Broadcasting, set out an empty podium for Walker, with the other candidates taking turns dunking him.

They hope that Walker won't be able to stay above the competition in a one-on-one contest. Black, Georgia's elected agriculture commissioner, said Tuesday that Walker is unelectable in November because of questions about his past.

According to a police report revealed by the AP in February, Walker talked about having a shoot-out with police after officers responded to a 2001 report that he was armed and scaring his estranged wife. Walker was accused of threatening his ex-wife in a protective order. He has faced questions about whether he lied about graduating from the University of Georgia, whether he inflated his business record, and whether he was the valedictorian at his high school.

Walker has been open about his battle with mental illness. His campaign blamed the media for highlighting the report of a shoot out.

Herschel Walker won't win in November, so choosing someone who can win should be the priority.

Walker told a radio station on April 20 that his opponents were jealous.

Herschel is going to win that seat, according to Walker.

Walker was meeting with voters in Burke County, near Augusta, on Tuesday night.

At times, the candidates Tuesday had a standard Republican debate, all saying they would welcome a potential Supreme Court ruling.

I want to ask those people who are for abortion, what did the baby do wrong to deserve to be killed? said McColumn, a retired brigadier general.

Several candidates promised to cut federal spending. Clark said he wanted to promote patient choice when he was asked about health care reform. Saddler was accused of being a former Democrat and promoting his experience working in the White House during the Trump administration.

King, a contractor and Air Force veteran, said he was the most well-rounded candidate, while Clark said he was the only candidate with legislative experience.

Multiple candidates expressed skepticism that the 2020 election in Georgia was fairly won by President Joe Biden. Some people continued to lie about the vote being stolen despite the fact that the attorney general of the United States said there was no evidence of fraud.

The focus came back to the empty podium and the man who was not there. If Walker couldn't handle a Republican primary debate where candidates agreed on most things, he wouldn't be up to bigger challenges.

The United States Senate is the deliberative body of Congress. As a United States Senator, you get up there and you debate ideas. Herschel Walker can get up here.

  • The leaked Supreme Court draft opinion was seen as a judicial insurrection by the Governor. There was an attempt to make it very political, to try to bully them into changing one of their positions, and I think that's what it was intended to be.
