If you are here, you probably have had the experience of losing your phone. It is easier than ever to figure out where your phone is with the proper settings.

Time is of the essence. You will need to act quickly to get that phone back because there are lots of people who want to keep it. We will show you how to track your phone, how to keep it safe, and how to make it easier for someone to return it to you.

How to locate your phone using Google

Google Find My Device Pixel 5a

Find My Device is built into most phones. If you misplace your phone, you can use this service to find where it last sent out a signal. All you have to do is type "Where is my phone" in the browser, and you will get the Find My Device map. A green icon on the map shows the exact location or approximate area of your phone's last signal.

Find My Device might only be able to get you close to the phone if you have an internet connection. It might be able to tell you that the phone is within a certain distance. If Find My Device doesn't give you your phone's location, it could be because the phone has a bad signal. If you can't get a response, keep trying.

Find My Device tells you which phone it is connected to, how good the phone's signal is, and how much battery life is left. You won't be able to get updated phone locations once the battery depletes, so you need to act quickly.

Find My Device offers three additional features to help you find the phone and keep your information safe.

If you click on this, your phone will ring for 5 minutes even if it's silent or vibrates. If you draw close to the lost phone's location, you will be able to hear where it is even if it is under a bush. This sound could alert someone else in the area of your lost phone&s location and prompt them to turn it into a lost and found.

Clicking on this section locks your phone so others can't use it, but also allows you to type a short message that will appear on your phone's screen should anyone turn it on. Space is limited so be succinct. It is possible to put in a phone number for someone to reach you at a hotel, a friend's number, or a work phone. Someone can read your message and call the number you list without really using your device.

I highly recommend using the Play Sound feature after securing your device and inputting a message so that if anyone else is alert to the phone's presence they will see your note and can call.

If there is really sensitive data on the missing phone, the Erase device should only be used. You will no longer be able to track your phone's location if you click Erase Device permanently. When the Erase Device command comes through, the data will be erased if your phone is off.

How to locate your phone in your house using a smart speaker

It is easy to misplace your phone if you put it down in your house and forget where you left it. It can be hard to find something when you leave for work or an appointment and you are scrambling around to find it.

Say to the speaker, "OK, let's find my phone, let's turn the ringer on, even if it's been silent before", and the speaker will turn on the ringer. To work, your phone must be connected to the internet via mobile data or wi-fi, and you must have linked your account and voice to the Home app. You need to have Find My Device turned on for your phone to be activated.

Everyone in your home can use Google Home to find their phones if they are lost, if they have linked their accounts using Voice Match.

If all else fails, block your phone's IMEI

If your phone is stolen or found, you will not be able to rely on any apps or services to find it; a factory reset will wipe out any of the original data, accounts, or passwords that are needed to remotely find your phone.

You have to use the nuclear option to block it. Before your phone goes missing, you will need to know the IMEI number, which is the unique number of your phone. No one else will be able to register a phone on a cell phone network if the IMEI number is blocked. If your phone goes missing, you should contact the police immediately. It will be added to a blacklist if you do the same with your carrier or service provider.

There are services in the US and Canada that can help you determine if a device is lost or stolen. There is also a global database with the same name.

Caution is always exercised when retrieving a phone. If you have any concerns about your phone being lost or stolen, it is best to set up and test your preferred tracking system as soon as you buy it. If no safety nets are in place, it will be more difficult to locate a missing phone, and it can be a bit of extra front-end work to register some apps.

Set up two-factor verification.

Everyone should enable two-factor authentication on sensitive apps that have the ability to purchase things, like personal info, banking info, or any app that has the ability to purchase things. The two-step sign-in process will help protect your device from being accessed by a malicious person.

Write down your serial numbers.

It is important to note that you should always have your phone's serial numbers handy. You can find your phone's IMEI number by using your phone's dialer. The IMEI number is a unique number that your phone uses to register.

You can get your phone's serial number from the settings. Go to Settings -> About phone and you should see the serial number. Having this information is particularly useful if your phone is stolen and you need to register a complaint with the police.

Set up a tracking system

Make sure your phone is set up so it can be found if it goes missing. Otherwise, you are on your own. If you are worried about your phone getting lost or stolen in the future, set up a tracking system now before your worst-case scenario strikes.

If your phone is connected to a wi-fi signal, you will get the best results, but if it is a mobile network, you will still get a fairly accurate location. You have to have a Google account to use most of the tracking services. We have included a list of helpful apps if you want more tracking options.

Google's phone location tools are your best bet for getting your lost phone back — as long as you've gone through the process of setting things up ahead of time.
