Musk suggested that government and commercial users could be charged a small fee to use the social networking site.

Musk said the social media platform will always be free for casual users.

The new owner of the platform, pending regulatory approval, was announced last week by the company. The deal is expected to close in 2022.

In early April, Musk, who is believed to be the world's richest person, said he expected to make significant changes to the company after joining the board. Ben Gilbert reported that some of the changes could include adding an edit button.

Musk said that free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and that the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.

A representative from the company said they had no comment.
