The narrative centers around how Count Dooku's Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress initially met Kenobi at the start of the Clone Wars, and how the relationship between the Jedi Knight and his former master is complex.

The official synopsis from Del Rey is here.

The Clone Wars have begun. Battle lines are being drawn. The peace guarded by the Jedi Order is slipping through the fingers of every world that joins the Separatists.

The Republic is blamed after an explosion devastated the jewel of the Trade Federation. Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the Order's most gifted diplomatic minds, was dispatched by the Jedi to investigate the crime and maintain the balance that has begun to dangerously shift. As Obi-Wan investigates with the help of a heroic Neimoidian guard, he finds himself working against the Separatists who hope to draw the planet into their conspiracy, and senses the sinister hand of Asajj Ventress in the mists that cloak the planet.

Amid the chaos, Anakin Skywalker rises to the rank of Jedi Knight. Despite the mandate that Obi-Wan travel alone, and his former master's insistence that he listen this time, nothing can stop him from crashing the party.

Once a Padawan to Obi-Wan, Anakin now finds himself on equal footing with the man who raised him. Everyone around them is at increased risk because of the continuedfriction between them. The two knights have to learn a new way of working together to save the people of Cato Neimoidia. They have to grow beyond master and apprentice to overcome the threat. They must stand together.

For Chen, Brotherhood was a dream project that unspools in his favorite era of the Star Wars saga, and chronicles the transition between Anakin and Obi-Wan as a pair of bad boys. Here is how it all came about.

Why was this a story you wanted to tell?

Mike Chen: I have been vocal with my agent about wanting to do a character-focused story for the prequel era, so on the business side of things, it really started with that and my short story from a certain point of view. This is a dream project for me, as I love the complexity of the Clone Wars era and the character of Anakin Skywalker. The Clone Wars movie is fascinating and ripe for exploration because of the shifting of the galaxy and how our heroes know and don't know it.

Where did your research lead to the creation of this Obi-Wan and Anakin tale?

I re watched Attack of the Clones, along with a list ofClone Wars episodes and parts of Revenge of the Sith, once the narrative outline was in place. I talked with E.K. Johnston, author of Queen's Hope, which takes place immediately before my book.

What were some of the geeky goodies you included in Brotherhood?

I have a spreadsheet of 70 references, tie-ins, and easter eggs woven throughout Brotherhood, and I am thrilled they let one for Obi-Wan. The sun-dragon from Matthew Stover's novelization of Revenge of the Sith is what carries over into Anakin's childhood and relationship with his mother. For Obi-Wan, it's expanding on his personal history with Satine Kryze of Mandalore, and in particular connecting to a detail from the Legends novel.

Space.com asked if you have a favorite Star Wars memory and if you have any special plans for the day.

Chen: I was born in the late 1970s and have been a fan my entire life. There are a lot of memories to pick from, but I think the one that is most important to me is my daughter's reaction to watching the Machete Order.

When we finished, it was clear that this would be something that carried an emotional weight for her, rather than simply being cool spaceships and laser swords. It's very special to know that we built a deep bond for her. We will probably spend Star Wars Day as a family watching something together and knowing that it will always be there for us.

Star Wars: Brotherhood will be available from Del Rey Books on May 10.
