Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage by a member of the audience while performing a stand-up special for Netflix at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a male member of the audience at Chappelle's show jumped on stage and tackled the comedian just as he was about to leave.
The attacker was stopped by security staff at the venue.
A person lunged at Chappelle's torso while he was speaking on the microphone, according to a video that was shared on social media.
The suspect was hospitalized with minor injuries and was found to be in possession of a replica gun and knife.
Chris Rock, who also performed at the show, asked if Will Smith was the attacker, alluding to his slap incident at the Oscars.
Chappelle joked that the attacker was a trans man.
Jamie Foxx, who was also present at the event, helped Chappelle. According to the Hollywood Reporter, after he was called on stage, he said: "This man is an absolute genius." We need to make sure we protect him. This means everything to every comedian who comes here. You are a genius. You are a legend, and we are not going to let anything happen to you.
On Tuesday, Chappelle performed at a comedy festival organized by the streaming giant. Chappelle's last stand-up special, "The Closer", which he is accused of making several transphobic jokes, was the subject of intense criticism over the past year. The controversy around Chappelle led to protests and a walk out by the company's employees.
