In a wild Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Playoff opening-round series, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 in three overtimes.

It was a contest that featured an all-time performance by Rangers goalie Shesterkin and a stunning relief effort from the Pens.

Shesterkin made the second-most saves in a Stanley Cup Playoffs game. He was on the verge of setting a new record for the most saves in a single game when he tipped home a point shot from Marino.

There was some goaltending drama in the first game.

The game went to a second overtime. The starter walked off the ice through the door at 9:07 into the second extra session. There were reports that it was a problem with the uterus. He made 48 saves through that point.

Domingue came off the bench and began warming up. Domingue has played in the NHL for eight seasons. The journeyman was signed by the Pens as a free agent in September of 2021. He appeared in two games for Pittsburgh this season, the last time in a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The start of the Game 1 was given to DeSmith because the Pens' starter was unavailable for the first two games of the series against the Rangers. Domingue made 14 saves in the second overtime and then three more in the third overtime, but it wasn't enough for the win.

It was the longest NHL game at Madison Square Garden according to the Rangers.

The Rangers dominated the early part of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Adam Fox. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead on an Andrew Copp goal in the second period.

New York was put on its toes by an effective forecheck in the second period. Jake Guentzel scored twice to tie the game. The Rangers scored on a shorthanded goal by Chris Kreider, only to see the Pens tie the game again on a power play thanks to a precision passing play from Kris Letang toEvgeni Malkin to Bryan Rust -- all unrestricted free agents after the season.

Game 1 had controversy. The Rangers received one power-play. Rakell was hurt in the first period on a hit by Ryan Lindgren. It was a minor penalty for roughing and was originally called a major penalty.

The most controversial moment came late in the third period, on an apparent goal that could have ended the game before the marathon overtimes.

The Rangers appeared to take a 4-3 lead with 3:10 left in the third period. He tucked the puck into an abandoned net, as the Pens goalie was taken out of his crease on a collision that included both Rangers forwards and the Pens' Brian Dumoulin.

The coaches decided to challenge for goalie interference after watching the replay on a monitor. If the challenge failed, the Rangers would have the lead and the Pens would have been given a delay of game penalty. That could have left them shorthanded until the end of the period.

The officials looked at the replay. There was no goal scored on the play after the call on the ice was overturned.

The NHL's Situation Room explained that the video review determined that New York's Kaapo Kakko impaired the ability ofCasey DeSmith to play his position in the crease prior to the goal. Rule 69.1 states thatGoals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper's ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; and (2) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impair

The goalie interference rule states that if an attacking player has been pushed, shoved, or foul by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with the goalkeeper, that contact will not be considered as initiated by the attacking player. The officials felt that Dumoulin did not try to avoid contact with De Smith.

The Madison Square Garden is where Game 2 will be held.
