As the collegiate landscape is in the midst of sweeping changes and uncertainties, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith on Tuesday proposed the 10 FBS conferences operate under the umbrella of the College Football Playoff with their own rules and structure.
Smith, who said he was just throwing ideas out, said the schools that offer 85 scholarships have different rules.
Smith said that they can create their own rules, have their own governance structure, and have their own requirements. If a student-athlete is hurt in his or her senior year, that might be in the medical space. You take care of them until they are healed. We have the funds in place to do that. The NCAA is the only thing you have to worry about. The requirements are in place. The schools that offer 85 scholarships in football have made a different commitment and that needs to be addressed.
Smith said that his idea has received mixed reviews. His suggestion comes at a time when the NCAA and Big 12 are both searching for new leaders, the NCAA is restructuring its entire governance, and the transfer portal has dominated discussions here.
Smith said that the championship of college football should not be changed. He pointed out that the commissioners are only talking about the 10 leagues and Notre Dame as they consider an expanded playoff.
Smith said that the model needs to be looked at differently. We need to control our own space. We need different rules at the end of the day, but we need to be careful with antitrust.
Colorado athletic director Rick George has been saying for years that college football needs someone to oversee the sport in the same way college basketball is run with Dan Gavitt, who is the senior vice president of basketball at the NCAA.
He said that college football needs the same thing.
