It has been 11 years since George R.R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons came out.
Sorry, that was the end. If The Winds of Winter is ever brought into our material plane, it will be a long book. The WINDS OF WINTER is going to be a big book. It could be bigger than A STORM OF SWORDS or A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, the longest books in the series to date. I cut and trim after I finish, but I need to finish first.
So. The sixth part of the series will be a long book. It might be the longest book. Or it might not. Who knows? George R.R. Martin doesn't seem to have an end in sight for his work.
I believe that Martin doesn't owe his fans anything, and if The Winds of Winter doesn't come out it will be a huge disappointment, but it's not worth threatening him. Whenever he gives an update on the book, it's all meaningless information that's designed to get people interested. io9 has coverage of the winds of winter for the past few years.
Writing the winds of winter is hard.
He got a lot done during the winter.
He hopes to have a first draft of the Winds of Winter done by July 2020.
He should stop talking about the book until he has something concrete to say about it, because it almost feels like he's making us wait for news. I think this is better than promising us release dates and then blowing past them.
