Despite a court ruling last month that struck down a national mask mandate on public transportation, the U.S. health officials still recommend Americans wear masks on planes, trains and buses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people under the age of 2 wear masks while on public transportation, citing the current spread of coronaviruses and projections of future Covid-19 trends.

Passengers and workers were required to wear masks by the Transportation Security Administration.

The mandate had been extended many times and was set to end on May 3. The rule was struck down by a federal judge in Florida. The agency said it would no longer enforce the mandate.

The CDC asked the Justice Department to appeal the decision. The status of the appeal was not commented on by CDC officials on Tuesday. A request for information was not responded to by DOJ officials.
