Courtesy of Fathom Events, the classic anime movie Gundam: Char's Counterattack will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. this December.

Originally released in Japan back in 1988, Char's Counterattack finished off the narrative arc of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, who were originally introduced to anime fans a decade earlier in the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

Dealing with the newly resurgent Neo Zeon and their attempts to drop various asteroids on Earth, forcing its inhabitants into space. It is up to the members of Londo Bell to challenge Neo Zeon and its new leader, Char Aznable.

Written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it featured wonderful mecha designs by Yutaka Izubuchi. With his design of the RX-93 Nu Gundam being one of the most popular designs in the entire franchise.

The movie itself is also a fan favorite in Japan and has gone on to influence numerous other works as well as various creators in the time since.

This limited theatrical release in the U.S. is of the high definition remastered version from a few years back, so it will look and sound absolutely amazing.

If you are worried about whether you need to see any other Gundam prior to Char's Counterattack, it was actually the first Gundam anime I saw and it compelled me to check out the rest of the saga.

That said, if you do want to get up to speed with the back story then Right Stuf Anime has released Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam and on Blu-ray in the U.S. and those series cover the main story arc for Char's Counterattack.

Char's Counterattack is also available on Blu-ray, so feel free to check out my review of that if you are at all curious.

Gundam: Char's Counterattack will receive a limited theatrical release on December 5. You can see if the film is showing in your area by checking the Fathom Events site.
