The state Senate's health and human services committee voted on April 28 to allow physicians greater freedom to prescribe drugs for uses not approved by the FDA, boosting the availability of ivermectin as a Covid-19 treatment.

The governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, signed a bill into law on April 22 that will allow a pharmacy to give ivermectin with immunity from administrative discipline or civil liability if they don't engage in malpractice.

The antiparasitic drugs ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine would not be allowed to be refused access by health departments, healthcare facilities and pharmacies in the state under the proposed legislation.

The Kansas Senate passed a bill on March 24 that would allow the prescription of ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine as Covid-19 treatments without liability for damages if the prescriber doesn't engage in malpractice.

The New Hampshire Senate's Health and Human Services Committee is considering a bill that would allow pharmacy personnel to give ivermectin without a prescription.

Contra

In January, Virginia's Democratic-controlled state Senate indefinitely paused consideration of a Republican-backed bill that would allow healthcare providers to prescribe and distribute ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine to Covid-19 patients.

Key Background

After Donald Trump promoted Hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 treatment in 2020, it experienced a brief surge of popularity. The FDA revoked an emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine in 2020 after it was found to have a potential for serious side effects. ivermectin, an inexpensive drug used to treat parasites, has proven to be more durable than popular interest would suggest. Some Republican lawmakers have tried to pass bills shielding healthcare professionals from liability for the use of ivermectin, even though studies show that it did not help Covid-19 patients. The unsanctioned treatment has been championed by Joe Rogan. The World Health Organization and the FDA have warned against using ivermectin to treat Covid-19. The FDA said that human use of ivermectin for animals is dangerous.

Crucial Quote

We have a process to look at drugs that people want to use because they think they work. I can't think of a word that would capture how irresponsible this step would be.

Big Number

30. The number of states that have proposed bills limiting health board authority to penalize the promotion of FDA-unapproved Covid-19 treatments has increased.

What To Watch For

The bill will go to the desk of the governor if it is approved by the New Hampshire Senate. The bill will be eligible for discussion when the Ohio House returns on May 17th.

Ivermectin doesn't help covid patients.

Hydroxychloroquine doesn't prevent Covid-19 coronaviruses, according to a new study.
