Ryan Tannehill may not be giving a red carpet welcome to his potential successor, third-round draft pick, Malik Willis.
Tannehill told reporters Tuesday that he doesn't think it's his job to mentor the young quarterback.
Paul Kuharsky @PaulKuharskyNFLTannehill stood up to a range of questions pretty well. One thing likely to draw scrutiny is that he said “I don’t think it’s my job to mentor” Malik Willis. #Titans.
The comments have been criticized quickly.
Kurt Warner @kurt13warnerI will never understand the “I’m not here to mentor the next guy” mentality… so for all you young QBs that need a mentor, DM me & Ill be that guy, happy to help in any way I can!
Ryan Clark @Realrclark25I see Ryan Tannehill is on his “Not my job to mentor” energy. It’s not, but man it makes you a good teammate. You can win without your QB being a good teammate but better for the team if he is. What a leader! Guess the Steelers’ DBs had it all wrong taking time w/ rookies & 💩
Tannehill isn't the first to bristle at the idea of helping to groom his likely replacement.
Ben Roethlisberger said he was surprised that the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Mason Rudolph in the draft and that he wasn't interested in mentoring the incoming quarterback.
As his Green Bay Packers tenure drew to a close, the relationship between him and Rodgers was difficult. Tom Brady sabotaged the New England Pats plan to turn the offense over to Jimmy Garoppolo.
Tannehill's thoughts aren't what the Titans want to hear.
The former Liberty star is more of a toolsy player than a viable starting NFL quarterback at this point in time and who will be a big project for whichever team selects him.
