The A-series of Pixel phones have been ranked among the more popular devices from the company, with affordable prices, intelligent features, and long software support lifespans. The Pixel 6 series has redefined the brand in a number of ways, and we are excited to see if the 6a takes a similar leap forward in quality.

The 5a impressed us with its two-day battery life, mid-range performance, and decent cameras, but when the Pixel 6 arrived with major upgrades for just $150 more, it made the 5a feel a bit superfluous.

The budget phone could come back into relevance this year if the rumor is true that the 6a could have the same chip and camera as the 6. We wonder what other compromises will be made to keep this phone cheap.

We want to see from the Google Pixel 6a everything we know about it.

It is clear that the Pixel 6a is on its way. Each of the four Pixel 6a models has a different wireless spectrum. These models could be specific to different U.S. carriers or could represent different standards in preparation for an international release.

We saw a retail box leak showing the possible design of the 6a, which suggests that many of the phone's details are already finalized.

There are rumors of a release date for the Pixel 6a. Jon Prosser claims that the 6a won't ship until July 28 due to chip shortages, but that it will be unveiled at the I/O conference on May 11. The Pixel 5a was pushed to late summer before most of the other phones.

It seems likely that Google wouldn't wait months after announcing its phone to actually ship it because the Pixel 6a is scheduled for May.

The price of the Pixel 3a, 4a, 4a 5G, and 5a ranged from $349 to $449. The addition of the two new products could change things up again. The ceiling is likely to be $499, given the price of the Pixel 6.

The new budget phone could have the same black camera strip and flash as the one on the Pixel 6, according to the renders leaked last November. It would swap the back fingerprint sensor for an in-display model. The 6.2-inch display is smaller than the 5a and 6.

There are 4 images, the first one is image 1 and the 2nd one is image 3.

The retailer leak confirmed that thePixel 6a would have the same camerabump as thePixel 6. We don't know what other colors will be offered, but all renders show a black model.

It is said that the Pixel 6a will hit a sweet spot for people who prefer one-handed scrolling over a large display. It will make the cool Pixel design more widespread, since the A series has traditionally sold in higher numbers than the flagships.

Specs and Google Tensor

The signs point to the same chip as the Pixel 6. An early leak showed that the phone would likely use the same computational tricks as the 6 and that it would rely on the same Silicon.

Current rumors claim that the base of the Pixel 6a will have less memory than the 8GB version, and that the new chip will be called the Tensor chip. No other phone had a custom-made processor or a flagship.

A recent Geekbench score shows that the budget phone performed just as well as the flagship phone in both single and multi-core performance. It is possible that the Pixel 6a will feel like a steal for this price range, comparable to the iPhone SE.

According to the latest rumors, the phone will have a 6.2-inch display, 6 gigabytes of memory, a 4,800mAh battery, and 30W charging; though the actual charging speed may be closer to 23W.

We found the average battery life of the Pixel 6 to be low, but an extra 186mAh and a smaller display could give us an extra couple of hours.

Brar suggested the phone will have a 90Hz display, while Shadow_Leak promised 120Hz. The latter is more likely for a budget phone.

The cameras of the Pixel 6 will likely be upgraded. It would use a 12.2MP primary sensor, 12MP IMX386 ultrawide, and 8MP selfie camera according to multiple leaks.

The internal nickname of the Tensor phone will be excluded from accessing Motion Mode, according to leaked code. Whether it is due to weaker cameras or slower base performance, the 6a can't handle Motion Mode.

Software

The Pixel 6a is likely to get three OS updates and security updates through the summer of 2027, giving it a ridiculously long shelf life for a budget phone.

Many of the exclusive features found on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro should be included in it. Live Translate, Magic Eraser, Real Tone, and Call Screen would be included.

I think that should happen because, as previously mentioned, the 6a won't be able to access Motion Mode, and that could mean other exclusive features won't make it onto the 6a for one reason or another.

Six things we want to see

Over the years, the Pixel A-series has offered an unpredictable balance of size, regional availability, and connectivity options. There are a lot of things on our wish list for the Pixel 6a. Our top six picks.

Google Tensor chipset

1. A Google Tensor processor

The leakers have all but confirmed that the Pixel 6a will have Tensor. If the goal is to disrupt the mid-range market like never before, it should fit the Pixel 6a with the same processor.

It may seem like an overkill. It would make a lot of sense to move the entire line to Silicon sooner rather than later.

Tensor would allow Google to offer five years of updates to cheaper Pixels.

It allows Google to continue building out unique features powered by machine learning, and to do so at its own pace, without having to backport them to run on cheaper phones. If the A-series Pixel uses the same Tensor processor from the previous year, it will benefit from less engineering overhead.

Better camera hardware, superior screens, and snazzier designs are some of the things that high-end Pixels could continue to differentiate themselves through. The ceiling would be raised in terms of the features that are available in the mid-range Pixel phones. The A-series would finally be able to compete with less expensive iPhones in terms of raw power, while also bringing the heat to cheaper, higher-specced devices from Chinese OEMs, most of which are poorly supported in terms of Android updates.

Five years of support for the Pixel 6 series is due to the use of Tensor. The mid-range space is not likely to offer such generous support lifespans.

2. A faster display

It's time for Google to follow in the footsteps of other manufacturers and offer 90Hz displays in their phones.

The jump from 60 to 90 is a noticeable improvement, and it's one of the more meaningful quality of life improvements found in the best phones around. Every app is more enjoyable to use because of faster scrolling and improved touch response.

It's possible to push a Full HD image at 90Hz without compromising battery life, thanks to the devices like the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 6.

Some leakers have claimed that if Google doesn't mind going over the top, we won't complain.

3. More colors

The past couple of generations of the A-series have been dull to look at. The colors of the phones were so dark that they might as well be black. If you use a case, we think it's time for a splash of color to be brought back with the Pixel 6a.

It's time for an A-series Pixel in something besides black.

Material You in Android 12 has a lot to do with color, as evidenced by the colors offered in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which are subtly different shades of mid-grey. It would be really disappointing to see the affordable Pixel available in just one color.

4. Wireless charging

It has been a long time since the most expensive phones had wireless charging. This feature has been offered by PremiumPixels for the past three years.

The faster wireless charging speeds of the Pixel 6 Pro do not necessarily need to be replicated. The ability to top-up your device throughout the day is becoming a table-stakes feature across the board.

5. Wider international availability

The availability of the 5a was limited to the US and Japan due to the global supply chain issues and chip shortage.

Supply chain issues are expected to last well into 2022, but we are hoping that Google will be able to expand the Pixel 6a to the countries where it is available. India could be added to the list, however, import duties could make it hard for the 6a to survive.

It wouldn't be fighting for the same supply of chips as every other manufacturer if it used its own processor.

6. Multiple size options

Over the past few years, the size of the Pixel A-series phones has been changed. Before the 4a 5G gave buyers a slightly-less-small option, the 4a initially launched as a smaller device. The larger form factor of the Pixel 5a was only available in 2021.

We would like to see the 6a in both small andXL versions. There is an opportunity for the standard Pixel 6a to fill this spot because of the lack of a clear successor to the pocket-friendly Pixel 5. Buyers who want a bigger screen could be targeted by a Pixel 6a, Plus, or Pro.

Features like 5G demand larger batteries and larger displays, which is why the recent momentum is in the direction of larger displays. We wouldn't bet on it.

Coming soon...

There are many possibilities for improvement with the upcoming arrival of the new phone from the company. We can't wait to see if our predictions come true because there are many signs that the phone will debut this month. What do you want to see in the new series?
