San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch talked about trade talks surrounding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on a radio show Monday.
Lynch said that the decision to have surgery brought things to a screeching halt.
We either want Jimmy to play for us or we want him to get the value.
According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Garoppolo had successful shoulder surgery.
Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo#49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery today, sources say. All went as expected (i.e. "successful surgery"). The plan and hope is Garoppolo is throwing well ahead of training camp. Only question is which team's camp it'll be.
Kyle Madson of Niners Wire reports that Garoppolo suffered a shoulder injury in the 49ers' Wild Card Round win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The team was surprised that Garoppolo needed surgery, according to Lynch.
Lynch said that the plan from everyone was to let rehab fix it.
The overwhelming thought was that it would. When he went back for the next visit, the decision was made that it wasn't improving and that they were going to take action.
Garoppolo is not scheduled to throw a football until July. Training camps will start at the end of the month. He is currently in Los Angeles.
Lynch said that the team wouldn't give Garoppolo away for nothing. The team would prefer to keep Garoppolo and go into the season with him.
Lance is in charge of the franchise. The 49ers selected the ex-North Dakota State star with the third overall pick. Lance sat behind Garoppolo as the 49ers made it to the playoffs.
Garoppolo has one year left on his deal, which has a cap number.
The trade options for the 49ers were reduced after the draft as many teams picked up quarterbacks, but there are still options, including the Houston Texans.
According to a source, the Texans will likely explore their options with Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield.
Garoppolo is in San Francisco.
