The Sky Bet Championship was won by the Cottagers in style, as they thrashed Luton Town in a row.

With two second-half strikes, the Serbian broke Guy Whittingham's second-tier record of 42 goals in a single 46-game campaign.

I have always tried to say I have not thought about the record, but when you are close to it, everyone starts talking about it, so of course I wanted to break it.

Fulham lift the trophy as they are crowned league champions after beating Luton Town 7-0

It was special in a big win so I think we finished the season like we dreamed, like we wanted with a big win at home in front of our crowd and I broke the record, so everything was perfect.

The stunning result in the final home game of the season saw them lift the trophy in front of their own fans as they prepare for another season back in the top flight.

After a slip up against Forest, they knew a win would be enough to win the title. With a top-six finish in their sights, they were not looking to be there to make up the numbers.

It was set to be an even affair in the first half an hour, but once they scored, they didn't look back.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic broke the record for most goals in a season in the second tier of English football

The 100th goal of the season was scored by Tom Cairney. He played a pass to Harry Wilson, who returned the ball to his captain at the top. It was a great hit from Cairney that helped to propel Cottagers ahead.

A goal of similar quality doubled the lead ten minutes later. Peter Kioso headed the ball clear, but only as far as Kenny Tete who then rifled the ball home from 20 yards out with a fantastic strike.

Wilson and Cairney could have added the third in the second half, but it was Carvalho who came up with the goods in the 54th minute.

It was a brilliant run from the youngster, cutting in from the left, with the ball tapped into his path by Wilson. There were more goals to come in the second half, after Carvalho picked up the pass and slotting home.

Whittingham had a record with four. The forward tried to pick up Wilson's through ball, but it bounced off Burke. However, the ball was immediately back at the feet of the player as he showed great instincts to slot past the player.

The fifth of the evening was close by. Bobby Decordova-Reid got the ball after Carvalho skipped across the top of the area. He slipped between the two defenders and found the back of the net.

Fulham were unstoppable after their breakthrough as Fabio Carvalho scored the third goal

Praise for Mitrovic

Fulham manager Marco Silva to Sky Sports: "What a fantastic way to finish with a 7-0 with Mitrovic scoring the last goal and breaking the record is amazing. "He deserves it. He played a fantastic game as well, he’s a very good professional, a good lad. He enjoyed the moment, we all enjoy being with him and I just want him to keep working hard."

Fulham captain Tom Cairney to Sky Sports: “It tells you about the team that we create a hell of a lot of chances but it also tells you about a person who’s a special, special talent.

“Forty three Championship goals is astounding. He deserves all of the plaudits; he’s a top, top striker at any level. He’s proved it at international level as well that if he gets a chance he’ll score so credit to him. “He’s really professional. He’s not quiet at all. We’ve been together four or five years now so I know him well.

“He’s going mental in the dressing room spraying champagne and hitting people a little bit too hard because he doesn’t realise how strong he is sometimes! He’s a good guy.”

Marco Silva is speaking to Sky Sports.

The players have been working hard to get it. It was great to do it the way we did tonight, it shows our strength and our aggressiveness.

They should celebrate because they achieved something important, but the way they did it was fantastic, and I am really proud of them.

Fulham manager Marco Silva says that their 7-0 win against Luton Town reflected their hard work this season as they won the EFL Championship

It has been a great season. We have been the most dominant team this season.

The gap is getting bigger between the two, but we want to keep doing what we are doing.

We have to be positive because we have done well, we have good players, and we want to grow to prepare ourselves for the future.

Fulham captain Tom Cairney reveals what it's like winning the Championship, what it's like playing with record-breaker Aleksandar Mitrovic and their hopes for next season

Tom Cairney spoke to Sky Sports.

We went up in amazing fashion. I believe that if we can stay up one year, we will be there for a long time.

We will enjoy this moment before we think about next season, but our goal is to stay in the league.

Marco Silva has brought a hell of a lot. He has brought a professionalism, a desire, a work rate, a training ground mentality change by improving little things around the training ground like food. It is small, but it is big.

I have not played under a manager who told me to go and score more goals in the second half when I was 2-0 or 3 up at half-time.

Luton manager Nathan Jones reflects on his team's 7-0 loss to Fulham and looks ahead to their huge game against Reading

Nathan Jones is the manager of Luton Town.

They have won the league and are the best side in the league.

We want to play in a certain way, but I have got nine first-team players out. My front two were missing today. I could not bring Harry Cornick on the bench.

We are missing five players, two wing-backs. The difference in what it is is that they have nine players out and they are going to Man City.

It is a tough day for us. We would have taken that at the beginning of the season, because it's not going to come down to goal difference.

We have to dust ourselves down and make sure we are ready for the game. We have to do that.

Everything about the game did not go as planned. We have four days now to be ready for our biggest game in a long time, and we can't dwell on it.

What's next?

The final game of the season will see the Cottagers play away to the Blades, who will also be looking for their own play-off spot. Both games will start at 12.30pm.
