A drop in subscribers has led to tighter purse strings. According to Deadline, the streaming platform canceled production on Pearl before it was done. The project was a part of a multi-year production deal that was signed by both Prince Harry and the project's creator. The animated family series followed a girl as she learned about influential women. The show is the latest casualty in a recent series of cost-saving measures by the streamer, including firing most of the writing staff for its fan site project and canceling the show Space Force. It axed two other animated children's shows.

The cancellation of Pearl is a part of the strategic decisions made by the company. The platform has invested a lot in animation and was projected to spend $5 billion on original animated content this year. At least for now, the company's boomtown mentality appears to have shifted.

The company's market value dropped $60 billion after a disappointing first-quarter earnings call. In the first few months of 2022, the streamer lost 200,000 subscribers. Competition from rivals like Disney+ and Hulu, as well as the loss of service to Russia, were some of the factors that led to the drop.

The production company owned by Prince Harry and his fiancée, the actress, is working on a docuseries about the games.
