Microsoft is testing a free 1GB-per-month VPN service in its Edge browser

A couple of years ago, Microsoft reformulated its Edge web browser with a back-end based on the Chromium codebase. Since then, the company has tried to make Edge stand out by adding on extra features, mostly related to privacy, security, and online shopping.

According to a support document published last week, there is a new feature coming to Edge that is powered by Cloudflare. A virtual private network, also known as a virtual private network, is a method of protecting your network traffic from other devices on the same network.

The Microsoft Edge Secure Network requires you to be signed in with a Microsoft account, just like cross-device sync of bookmarks and extensions, to use it. Edge will track your data usage and let you know when you are close to your limit.

Edge won't replace a subscription to a VPNs service for people who use it to circumvent geographical restrictions on video streaming because of the low data cap. It is enough for occasional coffee shop use, and that is the type of usage it is geared toward.

It used to be important to use a VPNs to protect traffic on a public wi-fi network, but with the use of HTTPS and browsers that prefer it, it isn't as important anymore. If you manually force HTTPS connections and browse the internet normally, you will still find a lot of things that are unencrypted.

It is possible to see all of the data you send with a private PureVPN, since it needs to send you the data your browser is requesting. The data that Cloudflare processes is subject to the Microsoft Privacy Policy, according to Microsoft's support post.
