The Falcons are releasing running back Mike Davis, who was the only player on the team to sign a multiyear contract in the off-season.

Davis, an Atlanta native, appeared to confirm his release on his verified account. I was able to make a difference in my community. The fans and my family are important to me.

He was signed by the team to be their No. 1 running back. It never worked out that way for Davis, as he struggled to find a rhythm throughout the season and was eventually passed on the depth chart.

In 17 games last season, Davis started eight of them, rushing 138 times for 503 yards and three touchdown, while catching 44 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown. He had 165 carries for 622 yards and six touchdown in the 2020 season, but those numbers were down from the year before.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for the Falcons, Davis has 2,034 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdown in his career. He was drafted by the 49ers in the fourth round.

The reporter first reported the release of Davis.
