The softball season at James Madison has been canceled after the death of catcher Lauren Bernett.
Bernett died on April 25. Her death was classified as a suicide by the Chief Medical Examiner.
James Madison canceled its remaining games this week. There were five games canceled last week. The season ends at 21-21 for the team.
James Madison coach LaPorte said in a statement that it was an extremely difficult decision and one that was not made lightly. We will use this time to honor Lauren and continue healing. We are thinking about our graduating seniors who have had their careers end abruptly. We will make sure that they are honored for their dedication and commitment to James Madison University.
Bernett helped James Madison make a historic run to the Women's College World Series a year ago and was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week last week.
