One of the very first gaming laptops with Intel's latest 12th Gen processors is the newMSI GS77. The results are impressive, but the experience is not great. The top-of-the-range Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti mobile graphics card is evolutionary, but not revolutionary. The all-black GS77 stealth package is enjoyable to use and scythes through demanding workload. It doesn't hit all the high standards you would want from a high price.
Spectacular features.
The main reason to buy the GS77 stealth is its raw power. The consequences of this focus are the main reasons not to buy it. The performance is achieved with an Intel Core i9-12900H at the very high end and an RTX 3080 Ti graphics card. You will not find a combo that is more capable than this in 2022.
The team-up achieved some impressive results. The 4K 120-Hz display model was tested by WIRED and it highlights what modern components can achieve at a 4K resolution. For instance, you can play games like Borderlands 3 at 4K on Ultra settings and get just under 30 frames per second, while Ghost Recon: Breakpoint can reach just over 40.
Again, gaming enthusiasts will likely go for a higher-resolution panel, but the results show that 4K high-definition gaming is becoming a reality. This was demonstrated in the game, where over 60 frames per second was possible on Ultra settings, and you could even hit 120 frames per second if you turned down the resolution.
The device only got slightly warm around the keyboard area during our tests, and the fans never got loud.
An imperfect package.
The 17-inch panel is bright but not special, and images are crisp, but it lacks the punch you get with enhanced technology. The lack of range makes the 4K 120-Hz panel difficult to recommend.
Those who are looking for a gaming laptop that can get the most out of top gaming titles won't be disappointed by the performance, if they choose this top spec. It's pricey at around $3,549 for the 32-gigabyte RAM and 1-gigabyte storage model I tested, and goes up to over $6,000 if you go for 64 gigabytes and 2 terabytes of storage.
For the power-hungry, there is little to dislike, but where it does fall behind is with its build. The key is the keyboard. There are some of the best gaming laptop keyboards around, and theMSI just doesn't match up here. There is a good amount of travel, but small keys and a lack of feedback mean typing feels closer to a productivity machine than a high-end enthusiast gaming device.
The speakers are basic and inoffensive, but we know you will use this with a mouse and gaming headset for your gaming sessions.
This machine is powered by Intel and features a good range of ports, with the main one being Thunderbolt 4. On top, you get a charging port, a headphone jack, twousb-a, and a strong selection of other things. The privacy conscious can use a manual webcam switch on the left side. The range of ports feels randomly assigned between the left, right, and back of the device, so it may take some getting used to.
Tough competition.
This isn't a device you'll feel comfortable lugging about on a daily basis and, instead, should be intended as a desktop replacement. Even if you might get some backache, the slim 21-mm frame makes it possible to carry a 17-inch laptop in a bag that can accommodate its size.
