Demian Maia was on a five-fight winning streak and steadily climbing the UFC welterweight rankings when he faced Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC on FOX 21, which took place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia in August 2016. Condit, the former interim welterweight champion, was coming off a loss to 170-pound titleholder Robbie Lawler.

At the time of the fight, Maia was the No. 3 ranked fighter in the official UFC welterweight rankings, while Condit came in one spot below him at No. 4. Condit was a -125 favorite over Maia, who entered the matchup as the +105 underdog.

As expected, Condit looked to stay at distance early in the fight in order to avoid the takedowns of his opponent. That strategy lasted a total of 35 seconds. Once on the mat, Maia looked to land annoying body strikes that would allow him to pass the guard of his opponent. Maia abandoned that approach when Condit gave up his back. Once in that position, Maia applied a body lock and then sank in a rear-naked choke. Condit was quick to tap to the submission hold. The fight ended at the 1:52 mark of the first round, earning Maia a “Performance of the Night” bonus.

Maia scored a decision win over Jorge Masvidal in his next outing to earn a shot at Tyron Woodley and the UFC welterweight title. Woodley defeated Maia by decision. That loss was the first of three straight defeats for Maia. He’s bounced back from that losing skid with wins in his past two outings.

On Saturday, Maia, who is currently the No. 10 ranked 170-pound fighter, faces the No. 11 ranked Ben Askren in the main event of UFC Fight Night 162.

UFC Fight Night 162 takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore on Saturday. The main card streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.
