The College Football season may still be a number of months away, but ESPN have already released their FPI rankings ahead of the 2019 campaign. Many sports fans may still be recovering from a whirlwind 2018, but the latest predictions have helped raise excitement levels amongst supporters. The College Football Power Index (FPI) is released each calendar year, and is a ratings system which aims to correctly predict season outcomes. Regardless of its accuracy, it always gets fans talking and provokes plenty of discussion amongst rival supporters. The index will be continually updated throughout the campaign, and it is used as a tool to determine which teams could potentially punch above their weight.

ESPN describe their system as “measuring a teams true strength on net points scale; expected point margin vs average opponent on neutral field” and the algorithm takes in several different factors in order to reach its outcome. It takes into account the last four seasons although crucial details such as team morale and other off-field issues aren’t generally factored into the equation.
The model has been so successful over the last few years that a similar system has also been created for the NFL.
The ranking system does have its flaws and there are a number of factors which it cannot possibly consider however, it can be very profitable on a match-by-match basis. With sports betting legalized in a number of US States in recent months, many football fans have opted to use this model in order to aid their wagering. Many football fans are now able to place bets on College Football matches through their mobile devices and, as a result of the recent legislation, they can also enjoy a number of casino games whilst on the move. There are many offers which help players to get started and sites such as bonus.ca, the home of casino promotions, enable new players get off to the best possible start.

The 2019 FPI predicts that play-off regulars Clemson and Alabama are likely to duke it out in post-season once again. The Tigers saw off their rivals at the start of 2019 to secure the National Championship, and ESPN are expecting them to come out on top for the second successive season. Clemson rank first in offense, whilst Alabama are still number one when it comes to defense, despite their drubbing in January. The pair have a significant advantage over third-placed Georgia.
Tennessee were one of the biggest movers in the latest FPI rankings with the Vols checking in at number 15 ahead of the 2019 campaign. Ohio State surprisingly dropped out of the top ten altogether whilst Michigan State are positioned in 14th despite an incredibly poor end to 2018.
Oklahoma also make the top ten, despite having a tough looking September schedule. Their defense struggled last season, but they tend to make up for it at the other end of the field. Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray will enter the 2019 NFL Draft, and the Sooners will need to find a replacement for the departing quarter-back if they are to live up their expectations.
It’s still early days and there is a long way to go before the new season gets underway, but ESPN’s FPI has understandably got College Football fans excited for the 2019 campaign, and another straight shoot-out between Clemson and Alabama appears to be on the cards once again.
