The head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike Sullivan, told reporters on Sunday that goaltender Tristan Jarry will not play in the team's first-round Stanley Cup playoffs game against the New York Rangers.

Sullivan noted that Jarry has been listed as day-to-day and hasn't been ruled out for the entire series, which is set to begin with Game 1 on Tuesday. He hasn't played since April 14 because of a lower-body injury.

Sullivan said they don't expect to have them for the first couple of games. We will give you an update as we go.

Chris Adamski reported that Jarry was wearing a boot on his foot at the photo session. He was using a scooter-like device to get around.

The veteran netminder had a career year in goal for the Pens, posting a 34-18-6 record, 2.42 goals-against average,.919 save percentage and four shutouts in 58 games. The Rangers boast one of the best power plays in the NHL, so his loss is significant for the Pens.

The New York Rangers had the fourth-best power play in the league. It made up for the team's deficiencies in five-on-five play, and the Rangers also got great goaltending from Shesterkin.

The Rangers will make things more difficult for the Pens in the first round. Jarry would have made a difference, but now Pittsburgh will have to rely on DeSmith.

During the regular season, DeSmith had a 2.79 goals-against average,.912 save percentage and three whitewashes. The backup has no playoff experience through his four seasons in the NHL.

If the Pens want to make it past the first round for the first time in a long time, they will need Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and other players to have their best performances of the season.
