The improbable story of the Toronto Raptors has been brought to film for release on Oct. 22.

The movie, entitled simply 2019 NBA Champions: Toronto Raptors, tells the story of their run to the title and how they brought an entire country with them on the magical ride, united behind the hashtag #WeTheNorth.

The film runs about 80 minutes, plus bonus features, and promises exclusive interviews and never-seen-before footage.

The movie will take viewers from the first day of training camp in Vancouver right up to Game 6 of the NBA Finals in Oakland when Toronto knocked off the Golden State Warriors to become the first team outside the United States to be crowned NBA champions.

It will show how a patchwork collection of players (not one player was selected in the lottery and Fred VanVleet wasn't even drafted at all) came together at just the right time to shock the basketball world. Others may not have believed in them, but they believed in themselves and their ability to do something special.

The film will tell how Raptors president Masai Ujiri made some bold moves after a disappointing loss in the 2018 playoffs by firing coach Dwane Casey and shipping out one of Toronto's favorite players, DeMar DeRozan, for Kawhi Leonard in a franchise-altering trade with the San Antonio Spurs.

Kyle Lowry, the longest-tenured Raptor, figures prominently in the movie in his story about redemption after all his playoff disappointments. The film also traces the unlikely journey of Pascal Siakam from his roots in Cameroon to the NBA, where he established himself as one of the league's rising young stars.

The stories of the club's big men, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka, are told as well. Gasol was acquired at the trade deadline as the final piece to this championship, while Ibaka made an impact as a shot-blocker and rim presence coming off the bench.

The movie isn't just about what happened on the court. Viewers will also get a behind the scenes look at how the city and the country got caught up in the wildness, through the exuberance of the massive crowds at Jurassic Park and through the viewing parties that spread across the country like wildfire.

Interviews are held with Lowry, Leonard, Gasol and Nick Nurse, the folksy coach who seemed to know how to press the right buttons at the right time.

Produced by NBA Entertainment, which is the production arm of the NBA, the film is being released to the public on Oct. 22, the same day that the Raptors open the 2019-20 regular season at home to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The movie will be available on Blu-ray Combo, DVD and online at Walmart, Sunrise Records, Best Buy, the NBA Store and Amazon.
