These Monster Mash-Up Baseball Cards Are Freaking Incredible

We are willing to bet that you think monsters are cool, even if you don't think baseball is cool. People think monsters are cool. If an artist took a bunch of famous baseball players and illustrated them as really awesome, scary monsters to put on baseball cards, you would probably think that was cool too.

We hope so because that is what happened. Alex Pardee is a well-known artist who is best known for his bright, stringy art that is usually scary even if it is cute. Pardee was recruited by the company to help with a project called Project 70, an initiative celebrating the 70th anniversary of the company in which artists create unique baseball cards that could never have existed. Old players on old designs, or sometimes players if they were a zombie or a predator, are modern players.

It was not easy to match players to a monster. It was sometimes like Pete Alonso. He is already called the polar bear. Pardee had to dive deep for most others. Pardee told io9 that the monster-application to the design happened when he was drawing the cards. I would research photos of them, or read their wiki pages, or watch highlight reels, and sometimes ideas would pop up.

You get a third baseman like the Pittsburgh Pirates' Ke'bryan Hayes who has a lot of arms. Shohei Ohtani is a dual threat like a set of conjoined twins. Pardee discovered that there are some really fun players out there. Younger players look like they are having fun. Ronald Acuna Jr., Fernando Tatis Jr., and Pete Alonso were smiling in highlight videos while they were dominating the games. I wanted to do half older and half modern players.

io9 is the first place to reveal Pardee's card for the Toronto Blue Jays player. The rest of the series will include two more yet-to-be-released cards, so click the next slide to see him. You can follow Alexpardee on social media.
