Waymo has its first commercial autonomous trucking customer

J.B. Hunt is a person.

In June of last year, the self-driving unit of Alphabet worked with J.B. Hunt to test its technology in Texas. The two announced on Friday that they are forming a partnership that will hopefully lead to the deployment of a fully automated trucking operation within the state in the next few years. J.B. Hunt says they plan to hold multiple pilots for Waymo Via. That is the unit that was developed for Class 8 trucks. They plan to complete more market studies.

In the first pilot, J.B Hunt said they moved 862,179 lbs of freight without their test trucks speeding or accidents. The conclusion they came up with was that the driver was ready to deliver on time and safely. A few companies are working on trucking technology. The company completed its pilot with J.B. Hunt a few months before it announced it was working with Volvo to build fully self-sufficient semi trucks.
