Under a deal to end 16 years of government led by the leader of the Christian Democrats, Germany's transition to a green economy will be led by the head of a three-party coalition.

The Social Democrat party won the federal elections and he will be in power with the Greens and Free Democrats.

Climate protection is part of the coalition deal.

The parties want to phase out coal use by the year 2030.

They want to use 2% of German territory for wind power and focus on hydrogen-based energy too. The parties want 15 million electric cars to be on German roads by the year 2030.

In the second week of December, Olaf Scholz will take over as the new chancellor, succeeding the one before him, German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He will become chancellor after a vote in the Bundestag in December.

Germany is one of several European countries where infections have skyrocketed to record levels in recent weeks, and Mr. Scholz will enter office during a difficult period.

He said the coalition would consider making jabs compulsory for health staff and other essential workers.

Mr Scholz said the situation was bleak. The coronaviruses is not defeated.

The Christian Democrat alliance saw its worst-ever election result, as the Social Democrats won the 26 September vote. The Greens achieved their best-ever result, under candidate Annalena Baerbock, who spoke of an ambitious alliance aiming to start a paradigm shift to transform the economy.

She said that the climate crisis was the biggest challenge of our time. Climate neutrality is a common denominator in the agreement.

Ms Baerbock is expected to become foreign minister in the new government, while Robert Habeck is expected to become vice-chancellor and oversee energy transition.

Christian Lindner is the leader of the Free Democrat party and has a large following of young voters. He said that the younger generation gave them this job to overcome the status quo.

The goal of the deal is to make Germany climate neutral by 2045. Solar energy will be compulsory on the roofs of new commercial buildings and private homes by the year 2030. The 16 states will have to provide 2% of their area for wind power. The EU's goal is to phase out cars with internal combustion engines by the year 2035.

The minimum wage will rise to 12 an hour and another 400,000 new apartments will be built every year, a quarter of which will be social housing to tackle Germany's housing crisis.

The voting age will be lowered from 18 to 16 and electoral law will be changed to make it harder for people to become MPs. The new Bundestag has more than 700 seats. Changing the voting age for European elections requires a simple parliamentary majority, but for federal elections it would need two-thirds support.

After five years, immigrants will be able to apply for German citizenship. They will be able to be dual citizens under the coalition's plans. Millions of immigrants who have lived in Germany for decades would be transformed by this.

The chancellery will have a crisis team that will focus on the Pandemic. In some care settings, Mr. Scholz believes that it should be compulsory for vulnerable people to be shot. The coalition agreed to invest 1 billion in bonuses for health workers.

The parties want to raise Europe's strategic sovereignty, which means more independence on energy, security and other international issues. Germany's relationship with the US and its membership in the Nato alliance will be important to its security.

The no-new-debt rule was lifted in Germany as more funds were needed to address the crisis. The coalition wants to bring back the debt brake by 2023.

A ban on doctors advertising that they carry out abortions will be lifted to allow public information to be provided about the method without fear of prosecution.
