How to activate a new or used iPhone and get cell service

You need to set up cellular service when you use an Apple product for the first time, even if it's a new phone or a used one.
Thanks to the setup wizard, this process is very easy.
How to use your phone.

The first thing we need to do is install the card. The small chip is what links your phone to the cellular network.

If you bought a new phone from an Apple Store or a wireless provider, you need to put the card in yourself.

If you want to do this, make sure the phone is turned off, and then insert the sim ejection pin into the hole on the side of the phone until the tray pops out.
1. Push the card back into the phone after you insert it into the tray.

If you want to use your phone with a different carrier, you need to contact your current carrier.

2. Hold down the Power button until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the setup process.
4. When you're asked to choose a connection option, you can either choose a cellular network or a wi-fi network, and enter your password.
You can either set up your wi-fi network later or just use the cellular network.

5. You may be asked to use your Apple ID. This is a security feature that is designed to prevent theft. Log in with your Apple ID if you own this phone. If this phone was originally owned by someone else, you need to ask the original owner to sign in with their Apple ID so you can complete the setup. You can change the Apple ID later.
It will take a while for the phone to work. The rest of the initial setup can be done once it's done. You have several options after the instructions in the setup wizard are followed.

You can restore from the cloud. If you're moving to a new phone and have backups on your old phone, you should choose this option to restore all your data.
Restore from a computer. If you don't use iCloud, you may have to back up your old phone on your computer. You can connect your phone to the computer using a cable.
You can transfer directly from the phone. If you're moving from an old phone to a new one, you can use the same technology. You just need to keep the two phones near each other.
Data can be moved from the phone to another device. If you're moving to the iPhone from an other device, you can use Apple's Move to iOS app.
Don't transfer data or apps. This is the simplest and fastest setup option, but you'll be left with a factory-fresh iPhone with no apps or data installed.

There are a few things that might have gone wrong if you're having trouble getting your phone to work. Try these steps.

Make sure that the sim card you have with your cellular provider is compatible with the plan you have with the iPhone. Make sure the card is seated, and turn your phone off if it is. Then restart the phone.
To make sure there's a green dot beside the device activation, visit Apple's System Status web page. If it's offline, try again later.
If you're trying to use a cellular data connection, you should go to a place that has wi-fi.
Try again after restarting your phone.

If you don't get help with your phone activation, you should contact your carrier or Apple support.
