A house cleaner working for Israel's defense minister offered to spy for hackers linked to Iran, says indictment

The Israeli Justice Ministry said that a house cleaner working for Israel's defense minister offered to spy on a group of hackers.

According to the indictment published on Thursday, Omri Goren Gorochovsky was arrested in Israel and charged with espionage.

According to the indictment, Gorochovsky and his partner had worked in the home of Benny Gantz for several years.

The Black Shadow hacker group is alleged to have been offered information from inside Gantz's home.

He suggested that he could install a piece of malicious software on the computer of a friend.

Photos of the minister and his family were among the items sent by Gorochovsky to prove that he had access to the defense minister's home.

All of the photos and correspondence were deleted from his phone.

Black Shadow claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on several Israeli websites.

The indictment states that Gorochovsky was inspired to reach out to them after reading about the attack.

Black Shadow has not acknowledged any links to the country despite being described as "affiliated with Iran" in the indictment.

The Shin Bet of Israel said that Gorochovsky was arrested before he could do any damage because he never gained access to "classified materials".

The Times of Israel reported that Gal Wolf said that his client admitted to some of the offenses but denied carrying out the security-related crimes attributed to him.
Wolf said that his client had acted out of financial distress, and had not intended to harm state security.

If he is convicted of espionage, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

According to an arrest warrant, Gorochovsky has a lengthy criminal history, including time served in prison and five convictions for crimes.

Questions have been raised about how a man with a criminal record was hired by a top official in Israel.

The Shin Bet will conduct an internal review of the processes of background checks.

It's not the first time that a person has been targeted by hackers with links to Iran. The mobile phone of a candidate for the election was hacked.
