Xbox is working with developer Mainframe on cloud MMO with scaling complexity

GamesBeat Summit Next will be held November 9-10. Find out more about the next step.
Mainframe, a Finnish studio, is currently working on an online cloud-native multiplayer adventure for Xbox Game Studios. This is according to Jez Corden, a reporter on The Xbox Two podcast. I have independently confirmed it through independent sources. The working title of Mainframes' game is Pax Dei. This is something that many people on the Xbox team are excited for.

Cloud-native means that all players can access the same game from any device. The studio is also looking at potential gameplay ideas that only work on remote servers.

However, one key principle is that mechanics scale according to their complexity. You can do everything in Pax Dei from any device. However, some tasks are more intuitive depending on the location you're playing. You can quickly open the game from your smartphone at work and do some crafting or resource mining. You can then take on more difficult missions, such as raids, once you return to your console or PC.

Key Xbox executives are excited about Pax Dei's potential to highlight the challenges associated with cloud-based development. Microsoft hopes that Pax Dei will provide an opportunity for best practices in this type of game. Then other studios will be able to follow the same guidelines in the future.
