The Australian western swamp turtle is one of many species that are unique in evolution and face a high level of threat from humans, including climate change.

Gopal Murali, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, and his collaborators mapped the global hotspots where the most unique and geographically isolated species were found. This included the western swamp turtle (Pseudemydura Umbrina).
