The iOS 15 Privacy Settings You Should Change Right Now

Apples iOS 15 has dropped. The world is now getting the latest version of the mobile operating software, as well as its iPad counterpart iOS 15.5. Apple released the download after it announced the iPhone 13 at last week's annual hardware event.

iOS 15 was controversial even before its release. Apple's child safety tools were originally intended to be part of this update, but they were put on hold after a backlash from the surveillance community. As iOS 9 launches, it is the second consecutive year that a crucial new feature has been removed.

Apple's iOS 14s app tracking control controls that stop advertisers tracking your phone were delayed until May 2021. They were added to iOS 14.5 after Facebook, other advertising firms, and others complained about their effect. Apple introduced the changes despite the complaints.

iOS 15 includes many new security and privacy features, including child safety tools. You should update your system as soon possible, as with all software updates. Updates can include more than just new features. They often fix security flaws and bugs. The last-minute iOS 14.8 update was released right before Apple's iPhone event. This shows how crucial it is to install new software.

Apple has made iOS 15 free to download. However, it can take a while for the update to be distributed around the globe. This could mean that some people might not get it in time. This is what you should do once you have the update installed on you phone.

Block email trackers

iOS 14 removed app tracking. Hidden trackers are hidden in emails you receive that target the targeted app. These trackers are usually in the form of pixels that are inserted into emails' body, header or footer. This allows the sender to receive information about you.

Apple's Mail Privacy Protection prevents email senders, most often those who send marketing emails or newsletters, from seeing your IP address and what time you open the message. Instead, it will route you IP address through multiple proxy server and randomly assign another IP address. Mail Privacy Protection is not turned on by default. Instead, go to Settings, Mail and Privacy Protection to turn on Protect Mail Activity.

Check out these apps

Apple has now added an App Privacy report to Settings in iOS 15. Tap on Record App Activity to turn it on. To toggle the option on, you can toggle the option to the on. This privacy report shows you a quick overview of which apps have used your phone's sensors in the past seven days, and what domains they have connected to.

If you allow them to access your photos, contacts, microphone, and camera every week, you will be able to view how many times they have accessed your data. This allows you to verify, for instance, that an app does not need your microphone in order to function. It is worth temporarily turning off permissions if an app isn't using them.

Hide your IP address

As part of iOS 11, Apple introduced Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP), a web browser that blocks online tracking, to Safari in September 2017. ITP is Safari's method of blocking online tracking that tracks you as you browse the internet. Apple's machine learning is used by Safari to identify which domains track you and then remove the data.

Technology has advanced over the past four years, and now Apple offers the ability to hide your IP address. Websites cannot use your IP address to identify you and then connect your browsing. You can turn on IP address concealment by going to Settings, Safari, HideIP Address, and then turning on the toggle for Trackers or Websites.

Apples Authenticator

Two-factor authentication is one of the best ways to protect yourself against hacking. Two-factor authentication will most often require you to enter a code, which can be generated via an app or sent via SMS to gain access to your account.

Not as secure are codes sent by SMS as code generated in an app. Apple has introduced its own authentication system with iOS 15. This means that you don't have to use another app. You can also keep your identity locked within Apple's ecosystem, if that is what you prefer. Verification codes can be set up in Settings, Passwords. These codes can be used to automatically fill in your Safari account when you log in to a site.

Private Relay Protects Your Browsing

Apple bundles some of its most advanced privacy options into its iCloud+ subscription. iCloud+ offers more online storage, but there are four additional privacy and security options that only those who pay can access. This is the latest expansion of Apple's push into services.

Apple's iCloud Private relay is a VPN-like service which routes your web traffic through multiple servers while keeping your location secret. This is done to prevent anyone, even Apple, from identifying what you are looking at online. Apple servers encrypt the URLs that you visit and then delete any information that could be used to identify you. Apple also claims that it works with trusted partners to assign temporary IP addresses.
