YouTube Premium Subscribers Can Now Use iOS Picture-in-Picture: Here's How

Google's picture-in-picture feature has been added to YouTube Premium subscribers as an experimental feature. This allows them to view video in a smaller window when the app is closed.

These steps will help you if you are a premium YouTube subscriber and want to test picture-in-picture.

Open a web browser to sign in to your YouTube account at YouTube.com

Navigate to www.youtube.com/new Scroll down to "Picture in-picture for iOS". Click "Try it."

When you are in YouTube, watching a video, swipe up/press the Home button to return to your home screen. The picture-in-picture mini-player will then appear. Google warns that you cannot lock your phone while viewing in picture-in–picture mode. However, you can resume the video by using the Lock Screen media control.

Google announced in June that picture-in–picture support would be available to all users of the YouTube app in the U.S. However, some users outside the U.S. were able to obtain the experimental feature and it may be made globally.

Google states that the feature will be available only until October 31. Although Google doesn't say what will happen after that date, it is expected that support will be available to both paying subscribers as well as non-paying users. It remains to be seen if it will be made available worldwide outside of the "experimental" setting.
