PSA: Track Existing Marriott Reservations & Rebook When Points Price Drops (or Switch to a Free Night Certificate)

Good morning everyone. I hope that you had a wonderful weekend. To make a long story short, I booked a 1-night reservation at a Marriott property for 60,000 Marriott Points per night. I checked the property's current rate a few days ago and it was now only 50,000 Marriott points / night. I was able rebook the reservation using one of my 50K free night certificates and received a refund in the form of 60,000 Marriott points. This post will remind you to check your existing reservations regularly to determine if rates have dropped and how to rebook it.Below is the Summary of Points section of my original reservation (left), and my rebooked one (right). You can see that my original reservation was for 60,000 Marriott points and that my rebooked one is for 50K free nights. After reviewing your original reservations and determining if there were price drops, you can rebook your reservation by logging into your Marriott account. Next, click on the My Trips tab and click the View/Modify button next the reservation that you wish to rebook.Click the Edit Room button. You can see that my original reservation was for 60,000 Marriott points plus $34.49 (resort fees + tax). You will find the current room availability and rates under the current booking section. You should be able select the exact same room type but at a lower rate. To make the switch, click the update button. Although I didn't take a screenshot of this step, it should show you that points are being refunded or that you can switch to a free night certificate if one is available. My new reservation now shows 0 Marriott points redeemed. However, it also shows that I used a 50K free night certificate. You will see the latest activity page. This page shows the refund of original points that were used to make the reservation. I now have 60,000 Marriott Points that I can use for future reservations. Marriott Points are preferable because they don't have short expiration dates, like free night certificates. These usually expire after one year. You could cancel your original reservation and have the Marriott points refunded to your account. Then, book a new reservation with the complimentary night certificate. The opposite process could be used: cancel the original reservation and book a new one with the free night certificate. After that, you can have the Marriott Points refunded to your account. This is because the reservation was linked to other 1-night stays at the same property. I didn't want to make it worse and have to call Marriott to relink them. It is up to you how you want to rebook the reservation. Please leave a comment below if you have any questions regarding the rebooking process. Everyone have a wonderful day!
