The WNBA is reportedly considering a 22-game regular season that would begin in late July, according to ESPN's Mechelle Voepel.
Games would be held at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, starting July 24, with the playoffs ending in October. Players have yet to agree to the proposal, per Voepel.
There is not yet a plan for the postseason under the current proposal from the league.
The WNBA normally uses a 36-game regular season with the top eight overall teams advancing to the playoffs. The dates of the proposed season may also create an obstacle for the league as many players have contracts with overseas teams during what's normally the offseason in the United States.
Per Voepel, "One source said it's still too early to say this plan is 'set in stone' but confirmed the parameters of what's being proposed. ... The source also anticipated the players might have some counterproposals."
IMG Academy serves as a boarding school and prep academy and has produced a number of professional athletes, including Jonathan Isaac, Dwight Powell, Anfernee Simons and Michael Beasley. Its Florida campus boasts four full-sized basketball courts and numerous housing facilities for players and staff.
Additionally, playing in Bradenton would place the WNBA only 90 minutes from Bay Lake, Florida, where the NBA is preparing to resume its season at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in late July.
The WNBA was able to hold its annual spring draft virtually on April 17 but has been limited to little activity since.
As the league contemplates a path forward, following the NBA to Florida may allow for a return to play.
