There will be a new update on Nov 20, 2022, at 1:26pm.
The suspect in the Colorado Springs nightclub shooting that left five people dead and at least 18 injured is a 22-year-old man named Anderson Lee Aldrich.
The Colorado Springs Police Chief said the suspect entered the nightclub and immediately fired shots from a long rifle, before at least two people confronted him and prevented him from hurting others.
The police were called to Club Q at 11:56 pm for a report of a sexual assault. Police said that two firearms were found at the scene and that Aldrich was taken into custody six minutes after.
Michael Allen, the 4th Judicial District Attorney, said that the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime, though he didn't say whether the suspect will be charged with a hate crime.
A man with the same name and age as Aldrich was arrested by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office last year after the man's mother said he was threatening her with a bomb.
In a statement posted to its Facebook page, Club Q said it was devastated by the "senseless attack on our community" and thanked the customers who subdued the shooter.
While police are still investigating the motive, the Colorado Springs shooting evoked memories of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Florida in 2016 when 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded. According to its Facebook page, Club Q was going to hold an all ages drag brunches on Sunday to commemorate the victims of anti- trans violence. The president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called the shooting an "unspeakable attack" and a "horrific tragedy" on Sunday. President Joe Biden said in a statement that we cannot and must not tolerate hate.
