Nancy Pelosi said her family was broken and traumatised by the attack on her husband, but that his condition is improving.

The Pelosis were attacked with a hammer by a person who broke into their home in San Francisco. At the time of the attack, the House Speaker was not in the area.

She said in the letter that a violent man broke into the house and attacked her husband.

The life threatening attack on our Pop has left our children, grandchildren and I traumatised.

Pelosi's spokesman said on Friday that Pelosi went through a successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and other injuries.

The Speaker said in the letter that his condition continued to improve.

Paul Pelosi's attacker was looking for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

According to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, thesailant is being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, and several other felonies.

A source told CNBC that the attacker shouted "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" before he attacked her husband.

The House Speaker said that they were grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services.
