The world's biggest K-Pop group will fulfill South Korea's mandatory national military service, the band's label said on Monday.
The band members will fulfill their military service after performing as part of the bid to host the world expo.
Jin, the group's oldest member who is set to turn 30 later this year, will be the first member to join after releasing his first solo album.
The other six members of the band plan to join after Jin.
After everyone has completed their service requirements, the seven pop stars are expected to come back together.
South Korean law requires men between the ages of 18 and 35 to serve in the military for at least 20 or 21 months. Athletes and artists who represent the country on the global stage are exempt from the law. Classical and traditional musicians and ballet and other dancers who have won top international competition are exempt from the pop band's eligibility.
The members of the group were given a two-year extension as they became one of the biggest musical acts in the world. There was some speculation that the South Korean government could update its law to give a special exemption to members of theBTS. It would be desirable for the members of the group to fulfill their military service requirements in order to ensure fairness, according to South Korea's Defense Minister.
The group went on a hiatus to allow each of its members to pursue solo projects, but insisted they were not breaking up. Less than a week later, the group's sixth No.1 album, Proof, was released. The group earned $50 million in 2020 and were ranked 47 on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.
