The battery life of the Apple Watch is unknown. The 18-hour battery life estimate was never budged until the Apple Watch Ultra was released. A new Low Power Mode has been added to the watchOS 9.

The Power Reserve mode on the Apple Watch turned it into a dumb device until you could get it onto a charging port. The new mode is similar to the low power mode on the phone. You will still be able to use your Apple Watch, but certain features will be turned off or limited to conserve the battery.

What Low Power Mode does

The always on display on the Apple Watch is disabled by Low Power Mode. High and low heart rate notifications are also disabled.

Low Power Mode makes it difficult to connect to the internet. You can still make calls from your watch, but you won't get notifications for an hour. You could miss emergency notifications.

If you are working out in the middle of the day, heart rate and gps will not be affected. There is an option that reduces heart rate, but it is currently unavailable.

If you don't want to upgrade your Apple Watch, this mode is a good option. It is possible that your mileage may be different. The health of your watch's battery is a factor. If your battery has deteriorated over time, you can only squeeze so much out of Low Power Mode.

You will be prompted to turn on Low Power Mode once your battery power reaches 10%. Some people, especially those with Ultras, might want to be more intentional in how they use the feature, for example, if they need at least 12 hours of gps and activity tracking to participate in an event. Low Power Mode can extend battery life up to 60 hours. You may get well beyond that.

Enabling Low Power Mode

To use Low Power Mode, you must have watchOS 9. The Apple Watch Series 4 or later is the only one that has this feature. You may want to upgrade if you think this feature is worth it.

You can enable the feature on your watch if it's equipped with watch OS 9.

Using Control Center

The easiest way is through the control center.

Look for the battery percentage tile and tap it if you want to get to it. The amount of battery you have left should be displayed. The low power mode is turned on when you tap it. You will see an explainer about which features are turned off when you turn it on. You can turn on or off from there. The latter allows the mode for a long time. The latter will allow you to turn it on for a short time.
