I am almost certain that you have seen the famous Horseshoe Bend if you have seen pictures of Arizona.

Here it is if not.

One of the best views of the river is this scene. The river is 2,333 km long.

The main viewpoint of the Grand Canyon National Park is not located at the horseshoe bend. If you want to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona, you need to stop past this scenic area.

It isn't easy to find an amazing view of the Colorado River through the desert.

We wanted to make it easy for you to visit this amazing photo spot.

What is Horseshoe Bend Arizona?

There is a horseshoe shaped bend in the Colorado River. There is a panoramic view of the Grand Canyon on the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The emerald green water of the Colorado River is not usually seen on the Colorado River.

Where is Horseshoe Bend, Arizona?

One of the best places to visit in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is Horseshoe Bend, which is 10 minutes away from the town of Page in northeast Arizona.

The Carl Hayden Visitor Center is approximately 5 miles south of the parking lot.

There is a lot of parking near the trail.

We had to park down the road and pay a $5 shuttle fee to get back down there.

If the parking area is full, have the driver of your car drop everyone off at the overlook area before you park your car and catch the shuttle. That saved us fifteen dollars.

Drive Times

It takes about 10 minutes to get to Horseshoe Bend from Page.

It can take 2 hours and 50 minutes to get to the bend from either Las Vegas or Phoenix, and from Flagstaff it can take 2 hours.

There is a 20 minute drive from the South Rim to Horseshoe Bend.

When is the Best Time to Visit Horseshoe Bend Arizona?

I would go to Horseshoe Bend at sunrise or sunset if I were to visit Lake Powell again.

Sunrise is the best time of the day to take a picture of the bend.

Is it time to wake up early for it? It is always worth it in my opinion.

The bend and river are not always visible. A lot of people like to visit early afternoon.

When visiting the nearby Page, AZ area, you can visit Horseshoe Bend quickly and easily.

The off-season runs from October through February. The best weather is not too hot or cold in the spring or autumn. During the summer there will be high heat and little shade.

The monsoon season starts in June and lasts until September.

What is The Grand Canyon East?

After visiting Horseshoe Bend, we realized that it is part of the Grand Canyon East Rim.

The East Rim of the Grand Canyon isn't the same as the South Rim, North Rim, and West Rim because you can't see it from the outside.

The Glen Canyon area is located on the east side of the Grand Canyon.

Horseshoe is a different view of the canyon.

Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

It is the only place along the Grand Canyon where you can take a photo of the Colorado River as it moves down the canyon.

The Glen Canyon Recreation Area is said to be part of the Grand Canyon East.

Our Experience Visiting Horseshoe Bend

Tips for visiting Horseshoe Bend

The only thing to do at Horseshoe Canyon is gaze in wonder, although it depends on how many photos you want to take.

The scenic overlook can be reached from the parking lot. There isn't a lot of time there.

There is only a small section of the rim that is fenced off.

It was frightening to stand on the edge of the cliffs. I was amazed at how many people risked their lives to take that photo.

No thanks, that's right.

We stayed back and only took photos at the overlook where there was a fence in front of us.

A young boy was pulled away from the rim by me. He took him closer and closer to the edge. I couldn't convince him to come back.

Two people died when they fell off the rim of the Grand Canyon while taking photos. It isn't worth it There are a lot of pictures from safety.

We could see the campground toilets on the banks of the Colorado River. I wanted to get down into the canyon by land or boat to see the view from there.

Things to Do near Horseshoe Bend Arizona

You're in good hands. There are a lot of cool attractions in the Page and Lake Powell region.

Combining them into a full day experience is easy. If you were going to do other things in the Lake Powell/ Page region, I wouldn't go to Horseshoe Bend.

Lake Powell

lake

Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area are some of the best places to visit in the world.

Underneath and above the water is a canyon that is an Oasis in the Desert.

Lake Powell has a lot of recreational activities on offer. We enjoyed our camping spot at Lone Rock Beach and didn't do much else.

This area was great for me. It is beautiful and has something to offer.

The majority of Glen Canyon sleeps under the lake.

The upper sandstone wall beckons you to play. Compared to the Grand Canyon, you can boat, ski, fish, kayak, paddle board or swim among the towering domes and cliff walls at Glen Canyon.

We went kayaking, paddle boarding and swam in the lake. It was very cold and only a short dip.

There are other places in this area that are worth a visit.

  • Rainbow Bridge – the world’s largest natural bridge, only accessible by boat and tours. And includes a strenuous hike from Navajo mountain. This is a sacred site to neighboring tribes, so be respectful and do not climb the bridge.
  • Rent a houseboat and explore further afield.
  • Hike into Glen Canyon’s back-country.

Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope Canyon

It could be from the old Microsoft screen saver. A photograph of the canyon went for over 6 million dollars. The polished crevices in the slot canyon are amazing.

We have a post on how to visit the canyon.

Glen Canyon Dam

The Glen Canyon Dam visitor center is a good place to see engineering feats.

The shoreline at Lake Powell has been created by the backing up of the Colorado River. Exhibits explain how it was built and why. From here, you can see the Colorado River and the dam.

You can pay to take a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam. Here, you can learn more.

Page, Arizona

The company town for the Glen Canyon Dam was Page. The center is now a tourist and recreational center.

Tips for Visiting Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

I have some words of advice for you before you go.

  • Arizona is hot. Like, insanely hot. So be prepared and drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and if possible, stay out of the midday heat.
  • Pack a camera with a wide-angle lens. If you’re a photographer, you’re going to want your widest lens to be able to capture the entire landscape.
  • Avoid visiting in the summer months. This is not only the hottest time of the year, but the rainy season. July and August are monsoon seasons, and it can often go into September. Plan your trip for the winter like January, when the weather is more tolerable.
  • Take snacks. The hike is only 1.3-miles round trip but the terrain is deep sand and a little rocky in areas. It takes a while to cover the distance because of this.
  • This brings me to my next tip – wear sturdy shoes. The sand can be slippery so make sure your shoes have plenty of grip. Sandals and flip-flops are stylish but not a good idea.
