This one has a lot of baggage attached to it and was released yesterday. The CDPR game that launched in a disastrous state has been fixing itself ever since. Through it all, you could tell that the world they built was interesting and engaging.
We have something that can only be described as an unqualified success from Trigger. I would recommend Cyberpunk Edgerunner to anyone over the age of 18 because it is a gory, sexy, strangely sad and compelling action series.
It is misleading to say that the show does not cross over with the game. Cyberpunk Edgerunners is tied to the game in a way that made it so enjoyable. It's not in terms of storylines or characters, but in the little details. The locations, the sound effects, the hacking and breaching animations, even the lingo, are places you recognize as having taken your character through during Cyberpunk 2077. If you watched the show first you could argue that the game could be improved if you watched it first. They work well together.
David, a young kid who drops out of Arasaka Academy, becomes entwined in the world of Cyberpunks, essentially low level gang runners in the city, through a connection he forms with a Netrunner. He is valuable to the team because he is able to resist the installation of a stolen augmentation. Time stop as you fight and shoot your enemies is what the Sandevistan is for. It is possible to purchase, install and use another thing in Cyberpunk 2077.
The story has an addiction to power that makes everyone lose their mind in cyberpsychosis. We spent the series trying to figure out if he is different.
The animation and character design from Trigger is amazing, and the writing from the CDPR team who scripted the series is very good. From the game itself, David, Lucy, Maine, Rebecca are all instant classics. I want to see more from this team in a second season, but it is complicated for reasons I can't really get into.
It was knocked out of the park with Edgerunner by everyone involved. It is a beautiful, haunting realization of Night City and the world created from the games while also being a gorgeously animated, compelling character drama. You may find yourself wanting to visit Night City after you finish Cyberpunk 2077.
