Robotman stares at Cliff Steele, his former human self, in a 1980s parking lot.

Brendan Fraser is going to make his return. That will happen with The Whale, a movie starring Fraser as a 600-lb. The buzz suggests that an English teacher trying to connect with his daughter has put him in contention for a best actor nomination. All the people waiting for a Fraserenaissance don't know that it already started with Doom Patrol.

The people who know Fraser as the leading man in The Mummy franchise think he disappeared from the public eye for most of the decade, although he did work in smaller roles occasionally. The actor said that speaking out about the incident had a negative effect on his career and that Fraser had suffered depression because of it. Despite his silly comedies, Brendan Fraser is a good actor and people are excited to see him return. He already did.

Fraser had a number of small, recurring roles on various TV series before he was cast as the voice of the DC Comics member of the Doom Patrol and semi- hero Robotman in an episode of the show. He was cast as the pre-Robotman version ofCliff in a full-blown Doom Patrol TV series that aired in 2019. The show only generated a small amount of buzz, since it was only available on the DC Universe streaming service, but critics praised Fraser for his role as the flawed, tortured Steele.

Steele was portrayed as a famous, decadent, and selfish NASCAR driver who killed his wife while driving drunk and nearly killed himself in the show. His brain was put into a robot that would return to consciousness in 20 years. His anguish over being stuck in an unfeeling robot body is huge, but still far exceeded by the guilt he feels about killing his wife and being a terrible husband and father. It isn't a cycle that can be broken in an episode of the show. He can still be a dick, he can still be self-obsessed, and he can still ruin relationships.

If that doesn't make you want to watch it, then you haven't watched it. The metal heart of the series is still based on Fraser's voice, as he conveys all of Cliff's anguish and dickishness. The physical actor of Robotman is meant to move like a robot without being able to convey anything. It's a great performance that keeps the character lovable despite his flaws. It is one of Fraser's best works.

The actor was cast as the star of the next film by the director. It isn't likely. He probably saw the trades where Fraser was announced to be playing the villain Firefly in the doomed Batgirl movie, a role the actor likely landed at least partially through his amazing work in the series. Fraser can be a really great actor when given the right material, like Hollywood did, and this has been the case with Doom Patrol. Don't fret about when the Fraserenaissance will start. The place is already here.
